Most of us like food that looks good, to an extent. Due to the way we are psychologically wired, we are repelled by anything that looks weird or bad. The same applies when it comes to food. It is one of the reasons why most people are extremely picky and conservative in their culinary tastes and behaviors.
Think of the Chicago pizza. If you are new to Chicago and come across their brand of pizza, it is naturally to be a bit thrown off at first. Us Americans are heavy reliant on pizza and are used to a specific style of pizza. The Chicago pizza is extremely think, gooey and oozing with molten cheese (lava, as they call it). It doesn’t look so inviting.
The fact is, however, that a lot of food items and combinations that initially look repulsive are, in fact, some of the most delicious ones. Case in point, the pizza in Chicago. Detroit also has some unique food items that belong to this category. Here we present some of these food items.
Melted chocolate in four-cheese pizza
While this is heavily loaded in calories and a disaster when it comes to healthy eating, it is finger-licking delicious, as our friends as KFC put it. Chocolate and cheese don’t go well together, on first thought. You should, however, definitely give this a try. On top of the natural taste of a cheese pizza, you have another popular confectionary – chocolate. Some pizza bars include this item in their menus.
Peanut butter on burgers
Us Americans have a thing when it comes to peanut butter. The world-famous Peanut butter and jelly (PB&J) sandwiches originate here. Peanut butter goes especially well on a cheeseburger, along with caramelized onions and pickles. Yet another calorie-laden item, but nevertheless delicious!
While this is not exactly a food combination, it is becoming a popular food delivery means in restaurants. It means exactly what you think. Cured meat, normally ham or prosciutto, is served on a human skull. Not a real human skull, don’t fret, just a plastic one. The eye sockets are covered using olives or cocktail onions to give it a frighteningly real look.
Bourbon and pickle juice
Bourbon is an American favorite, especially in the Southern states. A shot of bourbon is refreshing, smooth and delicious. Try it, however, with a shot of pure pickle juice to get a different flavor. The sourness of the pickle blends in well with the bourbon.
These are some of our favorites. The key lesson to learn is that food cannot simply be judged on appearance alone. Heck, even Readers’ digest agrees with us. If you know of more weird but delicious combinations, let us know!
